What is Kambo?

Kambo (or Kambu) is a traditional cleansing practice of indigenous peoples of the Amazon that uses the secretion of a special tree frog, Phyllomedusa bicolor.

For centuries, tribes have used this practice to strengthen the body, cleanse the organism, and boost energy, as well as to enhance hunting abilities and protect against diseases. In the modern world, Kambo is used for deep detoxification, a reset of the immune system, and purification on physical, emotional, and energetic levels.

Kambo is considered a medicine of power that helps to:

  • Cleanse the body of “panema” (negative energy or bad luck, as the tribes call it).
  • Restore vital force, mental clarity, and motivation.
  • Prepare the body and spirit for deeper spiritual practices (such as Ayahuasca).
  • Release emotional blocks and internal “toxicity.”

Shamans say that Kambo cleanses not only the body but also the aura, removing whatever prevents a person from moving forward.

Science and Composition

The secretion of the Kambo frog contains unique bioactive peptides that interact with:

  • The endocrine system
  • The immune system
  • The central nervous system

Key peptides include:

  • Dermorphin and Deltorphin – possess analgesic and calming effects.
  • Phyllokinin – dilates blood vessels, improving circulation.
  • Adenoregulin – supports immunity and cellular balance.
  • Caerulein – stimulates the digestive system and body cleansing.
  • Sauvagine – modulates stress hormones and improves mood.

Kambo triggers deep detoxification: it assists the liver, intestines, lymphatic system, and kidneys in flushing out toxins.

The Ceremony Process

A Kambo ceremony is conducted by a trained facilitator or practitioner. Here is how a session typically unfolds:

  1. Small, superficial burns (from 3 to 10 points) are made on the participant’s skin using a small stick.
  2. The Kambo secretion is applied to these open points.
  3. The effects begin within seconds or minutes.
  4. The session lasts about 20–40 minutes, after which the body begins to recover.

Post-Ceremony Results

After the ceremony, most people feel:

  • A surge of energy.
  • A sense of lightness in the body.
  • Purity of thought and mental clarity.
  • A strong sense of presence and tranquility.

Kambo is a traditional Amazonian practice for purifying the body and spirit. The frog’s secretion initiates a powerful detoxification process, reboots immunity, and restores vital energy. This practice helps to rid oneself of physical toxins and emotional “baggage,” providing the clarity and energy needed for new steps in life.
